In 1970s, scientists discovered that humanity was creating a hole in earth’s protective shield at ozone layer and raised alarm. The global response was decisive. The world’s governments adopted the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer in 1985. Under the Convention’s Montreal Protocol, governments, scientists and industry worked together to cut out 99 per cent of all ozone-depleting substances. World Ozone Day, held on September 16 is dedicated to this.

In this critical decade of Action, and as part of her commitment to engender sustainability, Arup Nigeria is hosting a webinar to commemorate the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer (World Ozone Day). The event, themed “Ozone for Life” in line with the UN objectives for the international day, aims to drive discussions and actions, around the reduction of ozone-depleting substances and greenhouse gases in the Nigerian environment, especially in the construction industry. It also aims to highlight the business case for such climate action.
The CEO of Arup Nigeria, Engr Kunle Adebajo, affirms that Arup, as a Global firm, aims to achieve net zero emissions in its operations by 2030. “Each part of our firm has a role to play in our becoming a net zero organisation. This is in line with the policies that have been set and are implemented across all Arup operations through rules, procedures and guidance”.
According to Engr Nimot Muili, an Associate Partner of the firm, the event / programme Manager, “we have recently published our Net Zero plan to support our net zero statement. It details our Sustainability plan towards the actualisation of the various UN SDG goals and especially the carbon neutral target. Our Sustainable Development Policy commits us to making a meaningful contribution to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). SDG13 requires us to take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts, including reducing emissions to align with global commitments. Thus, the focus of this timely webinar”.
