COREN to Host Lagos Regional Engineering Stakeholders’ Summit

The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) will host the Lagos regional engineering stakeholders’ summit to unveil and discuss its restructuring, reforms, and new operational framework.

COREN President, Engr. Prof. Sadiq Zubair Abubakar, said this while speaking to journalists ahead of the summit. He said that the summit’s importance in aligning engineering practice with global best standards, fostering collaboration between regulatory bodies and stakeholders, and driving national development through engineering innovation.

“This summit presents a unique opportunity for engineers, policymakers, and industry leaders to engage in meaningful discussions that will shape the future of engineering practice in Nigeria,” said Prof. Abubakar. “The reforms we have initiated will not only improve compliance but also strengthen COREN’s regulatory impact in all engineering sectors.” He urged stakeholders, engineering professionals, and the public to participate in this critical national discourse.

Prof Abubakar urged stakeholders, engineering professionals and members of the public to participate in the critical national discourse that would influence the trajectory of engineering practice in Nigeria.

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, will be the special guest of honor at the event, which will take place on Tuesday, February 18, 2025, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Marriott Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos. The Governor, who will deliver strategic insights on the role of engineering in sustainable infrastructure development and economic growth in Lagos State and Nigeria at large.

“As the regulatory authority for engineering education, training and practice in Nigeria, COREN remains committed to strengthening professional standards, ensuring compliance and fostering innovation in the sector.

“The forthcoming summit will bring together key stakeholders, policy makers, industry leaders, academia and professionals to deliberate on COREN’s recent legislative and operational reforms, which are designed to enhance efficiency compliance and governance in engineering practice nationwide.”

During the summit, COREN will also inaugurate the Lagos Regional Steering Committee (LRSC). This committee will provide technical and administrative oversight to COREN’s regional and state offices, ensuring the effective implementation of key engineering regulatory activities, including:

  • Engineering Regulations Monitoring and Enforcement (ERM&E)
  • Engineering Intelligence, Surveillance, and Enforcement (EISE)
  • Engineering Investigations and Compliance Monitoring

Regulatory activities to cover eleven engineering sectors: Agro-Allied Engineering, Aviation & Aerospace Engineering, Oil and Gas Engineering, Construction & Building Engineering, Mining Engineering, Maritime Engineering, Power Engineering, Communication Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Bio-Medical Engineering.

According to him, this restructuring aims to improve industry governance, deepen specialization, and enhance the overall regulatory framework within the engineering sector.
