Annie Ojewunmi, a 23 year old Nigerian aviation enthusiast is making waves in the male-dominated aerospace industry.
Annie Ojewunmi is a young, dynamic, and highly motivated individual who has made significant strides in the Nigerian aerospace industry. Her passion for aviation, coupled with her strong work ethic has propelled her to become a person to watch out for in aerospace industry.
Early Inspiration and Education
Her journey began with a childhood fascination with flying planes, leading her to pursue a degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Lagos where she gained valuable knowledge and technical skills on major foundational concepts relating to aerospace – Thermodynamics, Fluid Dynamics, and Turbomachinery. This academic foundation provided her with the necessary technical knowledge and problem-solving skills to excel in the aerospace field.
Her choice of Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering instead of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Lagos was influenced by the opportunity the former would give should there be need to switch careers to another specialization. However, she stated that is not going to happen as she is satisfied with aerospace engineering.
On parental Support, Annie said her entire family are behind her choice of career, though initial interest was spit between her father who wanted her to be a Medical Doctor and her mother who had always been convinced she will be an Engineer.
“At a point in Secondary School, because of peer pressure, I decided to switch to the Commercial class. My Mum provided valuable guidance and ensured I understood the importance of making informed career choices early on.” she recalled
Practical Experience and Industry Exposure:
Despite initial challenges transitioning from academia to industry, through internships and training programs where she gained valuable hands-on experience.
“My first role in the aviation industry was a six-month industrial training experience at Arik Air Limited, where I served as a Technical Aircraft Maintenance Intern. During my time in the Maintenance Hangar, my hard work and dedication earned me a remarkable opportunity to join the flight crew as a Flight Engineer in Training on the Bombardier Dash 8 – Q400 in 2021—an experience that marked a transformative moment in my aviation career.” She recalled during an interview with Ifeoma Okeke Korieocha of BusinessDay.
“In addition, based on my quest for more knowledge, I have completed several certifications in Aeronautics and Aircraft Maintenance from leading international organizations. One in particular that stood out for me was the IAQG Aviation Maintenance (AM) Specific Knowledge Course (TCSS 003) offered with a Scholarship by TEC Transnational. I was the best performer at the time, helping me bridge the gap between my academic background and the technical aspects of Aircraft Maintenance. The course also helped during my Graduate Training with Onedot Aviation where I gained experience in Quality Assurance and Non-destructive Testing. I also work as an Aviation Content Creator with Aviation Business Consultant International, USA. So it is safe to say that I am excited to be a part of the aerospace and aviation industry.”
I work to change the perception that gender is a limitation to success in the aerospace and aviation industry. Annie Ojewunmi
Founding the Young Aerospace Professionals Initiative (YAPI)
Recognizing the need for mentorship and guidance in the Nigerian aerospace industry, Ojewunmi founded YAPI. This initiative provides mentorship, career coaching, and job placement assistance, empowering over 100 mentees and securing internships for many.
Ojewunmi aims to expand YAPI’s reach nationwide and collaborate with international organizations and institutions to advance the field of aerospace engineering. She aims to contribute to global research and development efforts and share her expertise with the international community.
Advocacy for Women in Aerospace:
Ojewunmi is a strong advocate for gender diversity and inclusion in the aerospace industry. She actively promotes the participation of women in STEM fields and encourages young girls to pursue careers in aviation. Through initiatives like AeroWomen and AeroGirls Inspire, she inspires and empowers the next generation of female aerospace professionals.
Sustainable Aviation:
Ojewunmi is passionate about sustainable aviation and aims to contribute to the development of innovative technologies such as Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAFs) and Hydrogen Propulsion systems. Her goal is to reduce the environmental impact of air travel and create a more sustainable future for the aviation industry.
Apart from her initiatives at YAPI, she has also taken position such as the acting Young Professionals Chair at the Nigeria Local Chapter, Institution of Engineering and Technology, UK. She also participated at the APWEN SheEngineer 30 percent Club Launch/Award sponsored by the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2023.
Annie Ojewunmi is a rising star in the Nigerian aerospace industry. At her young age, she is already making contributions to both the industry and the community. As she continues to pursue her goals in her chosen career, there is no doubt that she represents the future of the industry and has become a key figure to watch out for.
