A Nigeria’s Simeon Ogunbunmi, a graduate of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology’s (LAUTECH) Computer Science and Engineering program, has carved a path of academic excellence at the State University of New York (SUNY), Binghamton, in the United States.
Ogunbunmi credits the strong foundation he received at LAUTECH for his achievements across the Atlantic.
Ogunbunmi’s academic journey began at Aatan Baptist Comprehensive High School, Koso-Oyo, Oyo State, where he graduated in 2014 with an excellent grade in his Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE). He then proceeded to study Computer Science and Engineering at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), where he graduated with a First Class Honours degree.
His quest for academic excellence made him set his sights on postgraduate studies in the US, specifically targeting an R1 (very high research) institution. This led him to SUNY’s Electrical and Computer Engineering program, which he subsequently completed with a perfect 4.0 GPA.
However, He credits his time at LAUTECH for not only his academic prowess but also for his strong work ethic and dedication.
“What I learned at LAUTECH influenced me positively both in learning and good character,” Ogunbunmi said. “I give it to LAUTECH for its commitment to producing graduates who fit for purpose and also be globally competitive.”
Ogunbunmi’s academic pursuits haven’t stopped at his Master’s degree. He is currently in the third year of his PhD program at SUNY, focusing on the cutting-edge fields of network security, machine learning, and autonomous systems.
His research experience extends beyond the university walls, as he has collaborated with esteemed organizations like the Department of Defense and the US Air Force Research Laboratory. He said this experience has which has deepened his expertise in the discipline.
Looking towards the future, Ogunbunmi harbors ambitious goals. He aspires to establish himself as a leading researcher in UAV Network systems, a field with immense potential for advancements in safe autonomous systems and smart city technologies.
His vision also includes fostering international collaboration in technological research, promoting innovation and knowledge sharing across borders.
Beyond academic work, Ogunbunmi said he was able to “support the students’ body and academic community.”. He joined the Graduate African Student Organization of the Binghamton University chapter. He was a Graduate Teaching Assistant, providing course materials, and also the Public Relations Officer of the students’ group, assisting in the planning and promotion of activities connecting African students with one another.
He aimed to be a promoter of international collaboration in technological research to advance innovation and information sharing. His plan also include mentoring upcoming generation of researchers and engineers in the field.
This story highlights the success of LAUTECH in preparing its students for postgraduate studies at top universities abroad. Ogunbunmi’s journey serves as an inspiration for aspiring students and a testament to the quality of education offered at LAUTECH.
