Nigerian safety engineers call for establishment of Safety Commission across states

Nigerian Institution of Safety Engineers (NISafetyE), a division of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, has called for the establishment of Safety Commission across the 36 states of the federation.

The National Chairman of NISafetyE, Engr. Akaninyene Ekong, made the call on Sunday, during the inauguration of Engr. Ajegwu Belonwu Fimbarr, as the 3rd chairman of the Anambra State Chapter of its organisation.

According to Ekong, the Commission, if fully implemented by the Federal Government, will regulate, monitor and ensure a total compliance to safety standard among Nigerians.

“It will checkmate domestic accidents, incident of building collapses, check the activities of quackery, create jobs opportunity for the youths and also create avenue for revenue generation to the government through people that may default the Commission’s rules.”

He noted that due to corruption and negligence of safety rules and standard, many Nigerians have lost their lives in the numerous building collapses across the country, a situation that have brought sadness to many families.

Ekong urged members to take the lead in addressing the problem of safety engineering practice in the country.

He equally called on the new executive committee members of the Nigerian Institution of Safety Engineers in Anambra, the academia, private sector and the State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo, to support the institution and consider the establishment of Anambra Safety Commission to keep residents safe.

The new executive members include Engineer Fimbarr Ajegwu Chairman, Engineer Kenneth Nzemeke, Vice Chairman, Engineer Dike Chukwuemeka Secretary, Engineer Joseph Alegu Financial Secretary, Engineer Chizoba Okafor Treasurer, Engineer Bertram Nwajagu Technical Secretary, Engineer Obum Ezeani Ex officio one, and Engineer Odinaka Okonkwo Ex officio two.

Speaking after inauguration, the third Chairman of the Nigerian Institution of Safety Engineers, Anambra State chapter, Engr. Ajegwu, said the institution will continue to play a vital role in the quest to deliver impactful, sustainable, and eco-friendly projects; as is desirable for a safe and livable society, assuring that Nigerian Institution of Safety Engineers, will also promote best safety practices across board.

The new Chairman used the occasion to express his readiness to work with Governor Soludo, in making sure all safety guidelines are judiciously obeyed to reduce death rate in the state.

On how to achieve his safety projection during his two tenure, he expressed the optimism that he would collaborate with the Media, NGOs, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Police and other safety agencies in the state for the purposed.

The event featured induction of new members and presentation of awards to some individuals including the State Commissioner for Power and Water Resources, Engr. Julius Chukwuemeka, State Chairman of COREN, Engr. Victor Meju, Lady P.N Anagor and Comrade Bonny Ozo Nkwuaku.

The Paradise News gathered that the inaugural lecture with the topic, “A safety and livable Anambra State: the role of safety engineers in ensuring codes and standards”, was delivered by the State Director of Fire Service, Engineer Martin Agbili.
