On October 19 2022, at the International Conference Centre of the University of Ibadan, Oyo State, the Nigerian Institution of Mechanical Engineers will be converging on the ancient City for its International Conference and Annual general meeting.
Theme: Advances in Communication and Digital Technology and its Impact on Mechanical Engineering Education and Practices. One of the two keynote speakers scheduled for the event is an Emeritus Professor of Mechanical Engineering from Gifu University, Professor Minoru Sasaki.
Below is a detailed biography of the well-travelled professor.
Professor Minoru Sasaki was born in 1956 at Sendai in Japan. he obtained Bachelor’s Degree in In Mechanical Engineering from Yamagata University in 1980. He bagged his Masters Degree and a PhD from Tohoku University, (March 1982 and 1985 respectively; both in Mechanical Engineering. He worked as a Research Associate in Mechanical Engineering Department at Tohoku University between April 1985 and March 1988.
He served in the same capacity at Miyagi National College between April 1988 and March 1989. He became an Assistant professor at Miyagi National College Department of Mechanical Engineering on December 1991. He is a visiting Professor at Universities outside Japan. Among which are the University of California, Los Angeles (Electrical Engineering Department) and Georgia Institute of Technology, The George W. Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering, DedanKimathi University of Technology, Nyeri, Kenya, Institute of Field Robotics, King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi among others.
At Miyagi National College, Department of Mechanical Engineering he was an Associate Professor at Gifu University, Department of Mechanical Engineering before becoming a full professor at Gifu University in 2003.Professor Sasaki served at Gifu University as Department Chair at Dept. of Human and Information Systems Engineering between April 2007 and March 2008, Visiting professor at, Head of Supporting and Development Centre for Technology Education at the Faculty of Engineering; Director of Career Center, Assistant Executive Director Gifu University.
He becomes a Senior professor in 2016, Course Chair at Gifu University Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, Intelligent Mechanical Engineering Course from April 2021 to March 2022. He is currently a Professor and Emeritus Professor at Gifu University
Professor Sasaki as an academic is also renowned for his huge participation in Social Activities. And has attended scores of International conferences across the world. he has made outstanding contributions as a researcher in the field of Applied Mechanics and Electromagnetic. His contributions have applications in industrial automation, robotics, vibration control, sound control and bioengineering. These are areas which are broadly referred to as mechatronics Engineering. The breadth and scope of his research work are reflected in his many publications.
Professor Sasaki is a prolific researcher who has received various grants (both individual and group) both local and international for his works in many subjects and fields. His research works have attracted over 34 Research grants and also more than Three 3 patents filed.
Professor Sasaki is admirable around the world for his ability to build research partnerships with like minds. And his seal for mentoring Younger scholars to become Researchers is well-mentioned by many who have crossed his path and benefited from his wealth of experience and knowledge. Sasaki’s personal quality influence his interest in promoting Engineering In Africa, and committed to helping in nurturing partnerships between African and Japanese Scholars. . He was a co-founding member of the Kenya Society of Electrical and Electronics Engineers KSEEE. An organisation where Engineers and scientists in wider electromechanical fields working in Universities and industries exchange and disseminate ideas.
He holds professional Membership of: American Society of Mechanical Engineers, IEEE senior member, JSME (Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers), SICE(Society of Instrument and Control Engineers) fellow, RSJ(Robotics Society of Japan), JSASS(Japan Society for Aeronautical and Space Sciences), Japan Society of Applied Electromagnetics and Mechanics Director , Planetary Society.
He has published over 250 Scholarly Scientific publications and has supervised dozens of PhD programmes both internally and external.
