The National Chairman of Nigerian Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Engr Prof. Muhammed Buba Ndaliman has urged the Women in Engineering to compete rather than look at their gender.
He said this as part of his message celebrating the International Women in Engineering Day Yesterday.
In is message, he said: “International Women in Engineering Day is significant in the in many ways as it raises the profile of engineering as well as promotes the diversity within the profession.”
“With more talented women in engineering contributing to the Profession and its growth and more hands toward development of our nation, we have every reason to advance the interests and wellbeings of our female engineers as stakeholders in the profession.” He added.
It is in recognising the roles of women in Engineering and National Development that NIMechE, with support of Engineers Against Poverty, UK and Royal Academy of Engineering UK became the first Engineering body in Nigeria to develop a working document, “NIMechE Gender and Diversity Policy”, as a guiding principle for our Institution and members.
“Today, we join the world in celebrating our hardworking and innovative women in engineering as they mark International Women in Engineering Day. We are especially proud of our members at APWEN and in various associations who have also been playing huge roles in the development of engineering and making differences in their chosen career. They are clear examples of women shaping the World.”
He counselled quoting Milka Duno,” when you put the helmet on, it doesn’t matter if you are are woman or man: your mission is to compete to win”
It will be recalled that the NIMechE though the suppeorts and partnership of Engineers Against Poverty UK has developed a Policy Document on Gender Diversity and Inclusivity which serves as guide in its operations. The institution have also created a new committee saddled with task to advise it.
What is more, the Institution elected it’s first female Deputy National Chairman in its last Annual General Meeting and promises more programmes to promote collaboration among the genders.
