As the engineers get set for March 4 to Mark the first World Engineering Day globally, various activities are being outlined in Nigeria and the Nigerian Society of Engineer, Victoria Island is taking it a notched forward with some mouth watering activities.
This much was glimpsed today during the Media Chat organised by the Branch under the leadership of Engr John Audu, (Fellow of NSE) to kick start the events for the week.
According to the Chairman, the week is being celebrated in commemoration of the World Engineering Day which starts on the 4th of March. The theme for this year is “The Role of Engineers as the pioneers of progress.”
Activities are scheduled for the entire week and they include; the media briefing, starting today Monday 2nd, where the Chairman met with selected prominent media representatives, including MyEngineers to sensitize them on the importance of Engineering Day that will be celebrated around the world on March 4.
On the 3rd of March, the Branch is going digital into what is probably the first of its kind among NSE Branches as it organises Online Zoom Conversation with theme: “The Roles of Engineers as Pioneers of progress”. Engr John Audu FNSE (Chairman, NSE Victoria Island Branch ), Mrs. Ibukun Awosika (Chairman First Bank), Engr Wole Abu (CEO Pan African Towers) , Engr Innocent Ukejianya (Manager SNEPCO) have indicated their readiness for the event. Participants are allowed to ask questions.
On the 4th of March, the Branch will move to the Lagos state University where its “adopt a university” program will be inaugurated as part of its commitment to Education Development.
The Chairman added that The Branch also plan to make a part funding to the University for a collaborative research and development effort that will jointly be handled between the two organisations. The event will signal a beginning of a new collaborative efforts between the branch and the University and also aimed at strengthening relationship between the industry and academic community. He expressed his delight that this is intended marks the start of a great collaboration with Victoria Island branch and the university. LASU was chosen because it is within its catchment area.
On the 5th, the Branch plan to initiate a program, tagged: ‘Catching them young.’ where it will visit group of secondary school students, at Command Secondary School who will be enlightened about engineering and also about the works of engineers. They will also be encouraged to take up engineering as career of choice and provided the guide towards achieving the goal.
On the 7th of March, the Branch will embark on community awareness workshop and enlighten the public about the hazards of used battery. “With the rise of renewable energy and the use of inverters, we will educate people that the batteries can actually get heated to the point of exposure and they will be told the mitigating measures they can put in place.” He said.
Engr Audu further explain that the Engineering Day will hold across the country at the same time. He stressed that the “Engineers are beginning to recognize their pivotal position in the society. we should be driving the growth in this developing society. This should bring to the mind of the engineers their pivotal role and how they need to step up and carry out initiatives that will launch our country into the technological age.”
It will be recalled that the World Federation of Engineering Organizations, WFEO has designated March 4 as World Engineering day for Sustainable Development Starting from 2020, 4 March. This will be the first celebration of the World Engineering Day; following its adoption by the General Conference of UNESCO.
According to UNESCO, Every 4th March- will also be used to highlight the achievements of engineers and engineering in our modern world and improve public understanding of how engineering and technology is central to modern life and sustainable development.
