The 4th quarterly meeting and year end cocktail party of the American Society of Civil Engineers, Nigeria International section was held on Thursday, 13th December, 2018 at Radisson Lagos Hotel, Ikeja.
The event also includes the swearing-in of Engr(Mrs) Rahmat Odejayi, a former national Vice Chairman and first female Executive Secretary of Nigerian Institution of Civil Engineers, NICE, as the new President-elect following the elevation of Engr Ajose Otinwa as the President. Engr Odejayi thus become the ASCE Nigeria International’s first female president-elect.
Technical paper presentation on the “Prioritization of RURAL ROADS for Access and Mobility” was delivered by Engr. Emmanuel A. Adeyemo,FNSE,FNICE,FASCE.
During the presentation, Engr Adeyemo said: Rural roads must have mobility and access linked to serviceable Local Government Roads for effective use.
He also dwelt on the need to develop our rural roads for easy access to Agricultural products and ease of transportation of same through the provision of Road Infrastructure to link the urban areas.
Three 3-main criteria considered in the decision analysis for construction or rehabilitation of rural roads include: Accessibility and Agricultural Marketing ranked 40% – the highest; alongside Economic/Agricultural Efficiency – 30% and Social/Markets/Industry Impact – 30%.
The Cost-Benefit Ratio (CBR) inthe consideration of Rural Roads for construction and/or rehabilitation would involve factors such as Existing facilities against Projected facilities, Agricultural Produce, and Population; amongst others.
During the meeting, the newly elevated President of the section: Engr. Ajose Otinwa,MASCE and the President-Elect; Engr (Mrs) O. Rahmat Odejayi,FNICE,MASCE took the oath of office which was conducted by the Past President and Past Governor, Region 10 of the ASCE – Engr. Emmanuel A. Adeyemo,FNSE,FNICE,FASCE.
This became necessary consequent upon the elevation of the erstwhile President of the section; Engr. Saliu A. Lawal,FNSE,FNICE.MASCE to the position of Governor, Region 10 of the American Society of Civil Engineers. The ASCE Region 10 comprises of all the countries of the world where ASCE has sections/branches with the exception of the United States and Puerto Rico.
Engr Lawal is a former National Chairman of the Nigerian Institution of Civil Engineers, NICE and now Immediate Past President of the ASCE Nigeria International section.
Engr Lawal who is Fellow of Nigerian Society of Engineers and Nigerian Institution if Civil Engineers is the Managing Director, Laslaw International Limited.
