The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Akwa Branch, has said it would soon embark on a comprehensive audit of buildings within the state.

The Branch chairman, Edmond Nkalu, disclosed this at the weekend, in Awka. He said the measure was to identify the quacks in the profession and defective structures for immediate removal to avert recurrence of building collapse.

He said the state government was deeply concerned about the attitude of some developers not building in accordance with the relevant building rules.

“Whenever we discover a defective structure, we will serve all relevant statutory notices and in no time seal off the building and appeal to occupants to vacate the distressed buildings for safety reasons,” he added.

He further said that the body would soon commence public awareness campaign to sensitize residents on the importance of strict adherence to planning and building regulations as part of its responsibility towards protecting lives of the citizenry.

Nkanu warned that no defaulter would be spared as they would be brought to book in accordance with relevant laws.
