As part of the efforts at sensitizing their colleagues on the activities of the students arm of Nigerian Institution of Civil Engineers, the leadership of NICESA paid courtesy visit to University of Benin on On the 3rd day of august 2012.
The Head of Department, Civil and Structural Department, Dr. Orie and other senior lecturers received the team. In his address, Dr. Orie welcomed the visitors and all present to the meeting. He spoke on the importance of the staff/students relationship in the department which he said that as a result of the great understanding and co-operation that existed between the parties, remarkable achievement and development has been recorded. He however stressed the fact that the department runs two programs under one head. He thereafter congratulated Dr. Izinyon and his team on their quest so far.
The NICESA National Coordinator, Felix Nwankwo while giving his speech thanked the department for their warm welcome, he also apologized for not arriving on time to meet with the students who were waiting to receive an address from him, Mr. Felix went further to intimate the house on the aims of the visit which he said was in two-fold: 1.To abreast the national supervision on their progress report so far and 2.To pay a courtesy call on the HOD Civil and Structural department and to sensitize the students on the need for NICE SA in university of Benin.
Dr. Eze welcomed the visitors and also during his presentation gave an insight on the history of ACSES as it concerns its relationship with the department, he went further to encourage the student executive on what they are doing, and that they should continue the good work, as it will also help to move the civil engineering profession to the next level in the country. He also went further to advice that we participate in politics to serve the people which will as a result bring about development in the society and country and also when in politics try to promote laws that will enhance the profession as it has a fundamental role to play in the development of societies.
Prof. Anyata expressed satisfaction over the enthusiasm in which the young minds go about their duties and encouraged us to be selfless in our service to humanity both as individuals and professionally.
At this juncture the HOD presented all present light Entertainment.
The president of the Association of Civil and Structural Engineering Students, Mr Jeremiah Agbede thanked the department for giving us an enabling atmosphere for the meeting. He further congratulated Dr.Orie on his appointment as the new HOD civil and structural department, University of Benin.
The South-South zonal coordinator welcomed the national executives and all present to the historic visit. He was corroborated by the speaker and president of the Association of Civil and Structural Engineering Students.
The HOD presented the maiden edition of the “ingenium” a magazine publication of the Nigeria Universities of Engineering Students Association (NUESA) to the National coordinator, NICE SA.
The issue on the inauguration of NICE SA UNIBEN chapter was deliberated on and the HOD said that there are some technical problems which have to be sorted out first before such moves are made, as the department operates two programs which are civil and structural engineering. The National Supervisor and the HOD however stressed the importance of putting professionalism first, therefore welcomed the idea.
The National coordinator however thanked the HOD and his team for the deliberations and solicit their co-operation in achieving any feat within the department in the institution.
However the meeting came to an end at about 6:30pm with prayers led by Dr E.O.Eze.
In attendance are Dr. Orie, Head of Department, civil and structural department, University of Benin, Prof. B.U Anyata of water and environmental, Department of Civil, UNIBEN, Dr. E.O.Eze, the staff adviser of The Association of Civil and Structural Engineering Students, The National Supervisor NICE SA Dr. O.C Izinyon, The National coordinator NICE SA Mr. Felix Nwankwo from UNIPORT, The National P.R.O Mr. Fieva Eghove from UNIPORT, The South-South Zonal Coordinator Mr. Igboenyesi Dominic, The Association of Civil and Structural Engineering Students President and its congress speaker, Mr. Jeremiah Agbede and Hon. Joshua Ogunboye respectively.
It will be recalled that NICE, a Division of Nigerian Society of Engineers, has established NICESA as its student arm in a bid to provide platform for unification of civil engineering students on various campuses across the country.
